On Your Side Investigation: Homeowners accuse Missouri company of selling faulty roof shingles

Barring severe storm damage, you expect your roof to last for decades. That’s not the case for two homeowners in the Ozarks. After months of hitting roadblocks and getting no results, they contacted On Your Side reporter Ashley Reynolds. She investigates what went wrong. Her insurance company says it’s not hail damage. It won’t pay to fix it, stating, ‘it’s a manufacturing defect’. Waterman filed a complaint through the state. She was again denied for the same reason. Then, she turned to the shingle maker, TAMKO and got a packet. She’s instructed to mail back a shingle sample. “We weren’t willing to take a shingle off. I didn’t want my husband on the roof. My son-in-law got up there and said if you took it off it would leave damage,” she said. The packet encourages the homeowner to hire a pro to do this, but Waterman does not want to spend the money. The form reads she’ll be reimbursed $100 if the shingle meets the limited warranty claim. She just bought this new metal roof. She says her TAMKO shingles started to crack and buckle after ten years. “It first started in my kitchen dinning room area. Ther...

Master’s programs in biological data analytics, microscope imaging to roll out this fall | College of Natural Sciences | SOURCE

Two new master’s degrees – one in the analysis of biological data, the other in the technology and design of microscopes – will be offered at Colorado State University starting this fall. CSU’s College of Natural Sciences is now accepting applications for the fall semester in the Professional Science Master’s Degree in Biological Data Analytics and the Professional Science Master’s Degree in Microscope Imaging Technology. Both programs are housed in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology but are highly interdisciplinary, drawing coursework from a range of disciplines spanning a dozen departments at CSU. With the 21st century becoming the era of “big data,” CSU developed the new master’s program in Biological Data Analytics to answer the growing need for trained professionals in high-level analysis of biological data. In the biosciences, big data is primarily driven from studies characterizing molecular systems, including genomes, transcriptomes, proteomes and metabolomes. Such studies produce voluminous amounts of data that require expertise in both data science and biology. The new program was developed jointly by the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biolo...

It’s been more than 10 years since Congress passed the Energy Independence and Security Act of

It’s been more than 10 years since Congress passed the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (EISA). In doing so, they put the age of inefficient incandescent lighting on notice. The law mandated strict new energy standards designed to kick-start a new era of greener, longer-lasting, more cost-efficient light bulbs — and that meant kicking outdated, inefficient bulbs to the curb. The rising standards have already long rendered 100W and 75W incandescents obsolete, and in 2014, their 60W and 40W cousins met the same fate. Congressional budget waffling briefly seemed to put the new standards on hold, but it was largely too late — the industry had already moved on, and wasn’t interested in reversing course. In other words, the age of the LED is here, and you only need travel so far as your local lighting aisle to see the change. With all of the new options out there (not to mention the disappearance of some important old ones), finding the perfect bulb can seem pretty daunting. New lights that promise to last 20 years and save you hundreds of dollars might sound good in theory, but how do you know which one is the right one for you? How do you know the...

Mob leader who hurled ‘Nazi’ slurs at Anna Soubry was photographed with Ukip leader Gerard Batten

James Goddard was in a gang of agitators that surrounded Tory MP Anna Soubry on Monday, calling her a ‘Nazi’ and a ‘traitor’. The Daily Mail can reveal that he was photographed with Ukip leader Gerard Batten at a far-Right demo last year. Since December, Goddard and his rag-tag bunch of followers have harassed and verbally abused MPs, campaigners and TV journalists at Westminster. His appalling behaviour has prompted more than 140 MPs to demand that Scotland Yard chief Cressida Dick tackles the ‘deteriorating public order and security situation’ outside the House of Commons. The Mail has established that Goddard is one of a growing number of extremists who have become close to Ukip. He was pictured last June smiling alongside Mr Batten at a rally calling for the release from prison of Tommy Robinson, the founder of the English Defence League. The photograph underlines concerns about Ukip’s lurch toward the far-Right since Mr Batten became leader last February. The MEP – whose salary of £67,000 is part-funded by the British taxpayer – denies knowing Goddard. Mr Batten has called Islam a ‘death cult’ and aligned the party with a disparate selection of xenophobic rabble-rousers an...

For some conditions, such as chronic pain syndromes like arthritis and multiple sclerosis, orally ingested cannabis

For some conditions, such as chronic pain syndromes like arthritis and multiple sclerosis, orally ingested cannabis is an important part of the treatment plan.  This is often done to provide baseline control over the patient’s symptoms with long-lasting relief, so that daily activities can be accomplished more comfortably and with greater ease.  Inhaled marijuana use can then be limited to an “as-needed” basis, which is often none at all.  If you’re living with a medical condition that causes chronic pain, oral medication might be the best method of using cannabis for you.  Best of all, you can make the capsules yourself with some common household items and ingredients. Currently, oral preparations are typically available in “edible” form, meaning food products like brownies, candies, or chocolates.  While an occasional treat (medicated or not) is certainly OK, it concerns me when people get into a habit of mixing food and cannabis on a routine basis.  Frankly, most Americans just don’t need an extra brownie in their daily diet, and certainly not several per day! Moreover, many patients have diabetes among their chronic medical problems and cannot safely tolerate an extra load o...

Non-parametric design from Visi benefits Brandauer’s products

Visi mould and die software has helped a 150-year-old precision stamping company overcome design issues, enabling them to ship around 150 billion individual products a year. Known for their strapline of “From Pens to Particle Physics,” Brandauer was established back in 1862, originally producing pen nibs. It has now grown to be one of Europe’s largest contract presswork and stamping companies, manufacturing highprecision metal components – mainly electrical connectors for automotive, medical, environmental, telecoms and micro-connector customers around the world. Operating with around 70 employees out of a 45,000-square-foot facility in Birmingham, most of their end products are stamped from a range of advanced materials including phosphor bronze, high-carbon steels, stainless steel, copper, brass and aluminium. The press tools themselves are machined predominantly from D2 hardened tool steel with carbide inserts. Manufacturing Director Stuart Berry says they needed integrated CAD/CAM software to fully support their CNC machine tools, which are capable of cutting within +/- 1-micron tolerances. They turned to Visi after finding that traditional parametric CAD systems led to a nu...

9 Soothing Products People Swear By for Sunburn Relief

Not to brag or anything, but in my entire three decades of life, I’ve been fortunate to have only felt the sting of a sunburn once. “A sunburn is a skin response to too much ultraviolet B exposure,” assistant clinical professor at the University of California, San Diego Melanie Palm, M.D., tells SELF. No matter how many layers of sunscreen I applied before hitting the beach that day, or the fact that I sat under an umbrella in a wide-brimmed hat and one-piece swimsuit, it happened. Blame it on my need to constantly wade in the ocean water and bask in the sun and my forgetfulness around reapplying sunscreen instead of staying put in the shade. And just to be clear, the best way to treat a sunburn is to avoid getting one in the first place by using (and reapplying) sunscreen, staying in the shade when possible, and covering your skin. (But if you’re reading this, that probably didn’t all go as planned.) According to Dr. Palm, intense exposure of UVB rays rays can cause a toxic cellular response that affects both the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin) and upper dermis (the second layer of skin). Shortly after exposure, some cells in the upper layers of skin can become so unhea...

City Can’t Figure Out What To Do With McCoppin Plaza And So Just Closes It Indefinitely

If at first you don’t succeed, try and try… oh whatever, who fucking cares. After struggling for several years to keep the homeless out of McCoppin Hub Plaza, Hoodline reports that the city has finally given up and just shut the thing down. Indefinitely. According to John Updike, who heads the city’s Real Estate Division and in that capacity is in charge of the public space at Valencia and McCoppin Street, the plaza is now considered a construction zone and is off-limits to the public—as the chain-link fence that surrounds the park makes clear. The chain-link fence is reportedly a placeholder until a permanent fence can be installed at a later date. McCoppin Hub Closed ‘Indefinitely’ After Efforts To Clear Homeless Camps https://t.co/9uvdKxSWGL pic.twitter.com/X3frNeUYpS The city initially had high hopes for the mini-park, and rolled out the welcome mat for food trucks. The trucks never came, however, and homeless people began congregating there instead. But not to worry, Updike assured Hoodline that the indefinite closure is not at all about keeping out the homeless. Rather, it’s about public safety. “There was a lot of abuse of the site and intimidation by people that frankly...

Several Indy 500 Winners Got Their Start in Orange County NY

Just after World War I, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, one of America’s first and oldest speedways returned to operation, and the Northeast’s oldest continuously operated dirt track, The Orange County Fair Speedway, came to be.  Indianapolis began it’s legacy as the pinnacle of racing in May of 1910, when they held the first Indy 500 race.  The same AAA sanctioning body that oversaw racing at Indy, would come to Orange County, NY in 1919 to stage some of the first ever automobile race on the then known “Harry Clay Oval” a dirt horse racing track at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Middletown, NY.  With a record breaking crowd at the fairgrounds that August day in 1919, dirt track racing had taken hold in the Hudson Valley region of New York and would remain a local favorite 100 years later. Because of the now named Orange County Fair Speedway’s (OCFS) age, it shares a lot of history with Indianapolis.  5 OCFS competitors had won the Indy 500 either before or after getting their starts in Orange County, NY.  One such competitor’s name has become synonymous with racing, Mario Andretti.  Andretti is one of only two drivers to have won races i...

‘Game of Thrones’: How to Make Sure Your TV Settings Are Just Right

Wasn’t that a great Steadicam shot in last Sunday’s “Game of Thrones” when Jon Snow was hurtling down the corridor in Winterfell with wights — we think — dropping through the ceiling — I mean, right? It was the ceiling? — as he brandished his sword — Definitely a sword, and probably his sword, right? — en route to the weirwood to try to save Bran? Forgive our hesitancy amid our enthusiasm, but as it has well been documented — “Game of Thrones” is just too damn dark to see what’s going on. With dp Fabian Wagner doubling down this week that it is viewers’ TVs that are the problem, not his camerawork, IndieWire decided to answer the question. What ARE the optimum settings to watch the show? How can you make the fog of war less, well, foggy? We all need to accept that the shows and movies we stream have been significantly compressed — in laymen terms, large digital files have been packed into a smaller space. Some companies do a better job compressing images than others. Loss of detail from compression is most visible (so to speak) in the dark parts of frame. Higher resolution images lead to more detail in the blacks of the frame. Chances are strong that Sunday night, with everyone ...
