Inspirational display at Vivid Light Festival 2018 features Plexiglas sheets

Allplastics Engineering supplied a large number of Plexiglas Satin Ice sheets to build an inspirational installation at the Sydney Vivid Light Festival 2018. Allplastics has been associated with several exciting installations at the Vivid festival over the last decade. Commissioned by ANL Design, the installation titled ‘Closer’ was constructed as a series of 3D interconnected translucent cubes. Visitors were invited to enter and discover that the interior of the structure was actually a maze, with shadowy silhouettes seen through walls to give the experience of isolation and disorientation. Located on the corner of Phillip Street and Bridge in Sydney’s CBD, the installation was a commentary on social media and human relationships in the digital age. ANL Design approached Allplastics for the supply of Plexiglas Satin Ice, sheets which became the most outstanding feature of the display. Plexiglas Satin Ice was chosen for its unique light diffusion properties, satin surface finish, which minimises finger marks, and its written 10-year warranty for outdoor use, as well as all the normal advantages associated with acrylics such as safety, recyclability and impact strength (11 times...

Two Shuttered Ford Plants May Sell To The Same Buyer

Ford shut down a couple manufacturing plants in the U.S. in the past including the former Walton Hills stamping plant and the Brook Park aluminum plant and the site of the former foundry. Reports indicate the Ford plants may sell to one prospective buyer. Word is that the buyer plans to use both the facilities for operations, which is a marked change from how things with retired factories usually happen. It’s common for old closed factories to be turned into industrial parks with multiple users. Word of the potential sale of the Ford plants to one user comes from four sources who claim to be familiar with the deal reports Crain’s. The sources did note they haven’t learned the buyer’s identity or product profile. However, the sources were unanimous in saying that they had been told the deal would be a “game-changer for the economy of the region. A deal with both Ford plants going to one buyer would signal a resurgence of manufacturing in the region. The former stamping plant is a massive facility at 2 million-square-feet sitting on 111 acres; it was shuttered in 2015. The other facility is 1.7 million-square-foot and has been unused since 2000. That facility has another adjacent...

Serpentine Galleries’s CEO Has a Stake in a Cyberweapons Company, Guardian Reports

Yana Peel, who is known for her human rights advocacy, was revealed by the Guardian to have a stake in NSO Group, an Israeli Cyber intelligence company that has been allegedly involved in spying on activists in several countries. In spite of her reputation as a vocal champion for human rights, the Guardian reported on Friday that Yana Peel, the Chief Executive of Serpentine Galleries in London, has a stake in a cyberweapons company whose technology has allegedly been used by authoritarian regimes to crack down on political dissidents. According to corporate records in the United States and Luxemburg, Peel is a major shareholder of an equity firm, Novalpina Capital, which owns the $1 billion Israeli cyberintelligence company NSO Group.  NSO has been widely condemned by human rights groups for its ties with anti-democratic regimes and is subject to several ongoing lawsuits over its activity, the Guardian reported. An Amnesty International report from August 2018 accused the company of licensing its Pegasus software to the government of Saudi Arabia, which used it to hack and monitor mobile devices belonging to activists. Amnesty also reported that the spyware was allegedly used ag...

REVIEW – World travelers are exposed to different cultures, languages, food, sights, and AC power plugs

REVIEW – World travelers are exposed to different cultures, languages, food, sights, and AC power plugs and sockets. The Xcentz universal travel adapter makes dealing with different types of plugs and sockets more convenient. As a bonus, this device has three USB-A ports and a USB-C port. Read on to see what I think! The Xcentz universal travel adapter permits cross connecting plugs from different regions so that the pins will align and current will flow through the adapter. The adapter does not convert voltage or adjust frequency, so travelers must be cautious about using dual voltage electronics and electronics that are not sensitive to variation in AC frequency. The adapter has two parts: a type C/E/F plug that adapts to various countries, and an adaptor that plugs into various outlets, powers the three USB-A and one USB-C power adapters, and also has a type F outlet on the back. The description of the type of outlet is based on the designation provided by the IEC. The different type of plugs and the countries/geographies where the plugs are used are listed on the following table. Not every plug is supported in each country, but according to the IEC, only Lesotho and Swazilan...

Industrial designer [Eric Strebel] has access to big, walk-in spray booths, but bigger isn’t always better.

Industrial designer [Eric Strebel] has access to big, walk-in spray booths, but bigger isn’t always better. For small jobs, it’s overkill, and he wanted his own spray booth anyway. If you’re ready to upgrade from that ratty old cardboard box in the garage, look no further than [Eric]’s spray booth how-to after the break. If you don’t already know, [Eric] is something of a foam core legend. He has several videos about model building techniques that produce really slick results, so it’s no surprise to see these skills transfer to a larger build. The booth is built from a single 40″ x 60″ sheet of 1/2″ foam core board, a furnace filter, and a vent fan modified to fit his shop’s system. The whole thing cost less than $200, most of which goes toward the fan. [Eric] modified an existing spray booth plan to fit his needs and added some really nice touches along the way. All the edges are beveled and the unfinished faces are taped, so at first glance it looks like it’s made out of painted wood or melamine board. The furnace filter slides out one side for easy replacement and is braced with foam scraps so it won’t fall forward. The best part of this booth is the LED strips—they make for ...

Kids Company: ‘extraordinary catalogue of failures’

A committee of MPs has blamed the collapse of Kids Company on an “extraordinary catalogue of failures” at the charity. Its trustees were “negligent” and relied on “wishful thinking and false optimism” as financial troubles piled up, says the cross-party report by the Commons Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee. “MPs said trustees had neither the skills or experience to hold to account Kids Company’s founder Camila Batmanghelidjh,” says the Financial Times. They “allowed the charity’s weak financial position to persist for years, a key reason why it was unable to survive the “allegations of abuse”. A police investigation into the abuse allegations was dropped last week after officials said they could find no evidence to support them. Batmanghelidjh dismissed the report, describing it as a “product of bias and rumour”, while the charity’s trustees said the MPs had ignored the evidence. “The report spares no one,” says the BBC’s Lucy Manning. “Camila Batmanghelidjh, the trustees, government ministers, the auditors and regulators are all crit...

Understanding the ‘Science’ of Color : Plastics Technology

And as with all sciences, there are fundamentals that must be considered to do color right. Here’s a helpful start. When enumerating the advantages of using plastics over other materials such as metals, ceramics, and wood, one of the items that inevitably comes up is molded-in color. Even in industries like automotive that still rely on painting plastics, the long-term objective is to achieve the desired finish and durability with molded-in color. The plastics industry has touted this advantage for such a long time that we frequently do not consider the intricacies and potential problems that can arise when incorporating color into a polymer. But there is a science to this process; and as with all sciences, there are fundamentals that must be observed if things are to work properly. In this article we will briefly review these fundamentals and discuss the things that we observe when we fail to adhere to them. There are several key items that are essential in developing a colorant package for any polymer. The first of these is the avoidance of any chemical incompatibility between the chemistry of the polymer and the chemistry of the colorant system. Chemical reactions proceed mor...

OGF Article Designing Efficient Facilities in Challenging Locations

As exploration and production (E&P) projects move into more unique territories, operating companies must evaluate their projects’ infrastructures and devise strategies to sufficiently prepare for a growing energy demand. These strategies may take the form of significant upgrades to existing facilities or the construction of new facilities altogether. At the 2015 SPE Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition, representatives from small private and state-owned operating companies discussed the challenges they faced with facilities design and construction, both onshore and offshore. This feature examines some of the strategies that were taken to handle those challenges. Last year, Pacific E&P finished work on a pilot for the first in-situ combustion project in Colombia, at the Quifa oil field located in the eastern part of the Llanos basin. Pacific E&P had five main objectives with the pilot. First, it wanted to evaluate the applicability of in-situ combustion in the heavy oil field. Second, it wanted to assess the impact of the reservoir heterogeneities on the process performance. Third, it sought experience and accuracy on the simulation and analytical models develo...
