The agents were searching the office of Sen. Martin Sandoval, D-Chicago, at the Capitol in Springfield.  SPRINGFIELD — FBI agents were seen Tuesday, Sept. 24, searching the Capitol office of state Sen. Martin Sandoval, D-Chicago, and later carrying boxes and a brown bag marked “evidence” into two SUVs. John Althen, a spokesman in the FBI’s Chicago field office, confirmed that agents were present in the building but provided no additional details. “They are engaged in an authorized law enforcement activity. Beyond that we have no further comment,” he said. The first-floor suite contains the offices of several senators, but it was apparent the agents were focusing on the office of Sandoval, who is the Democratic Caucus whip. Through the translucent windows, reporters outside co...

USB Type-C is the iPhone charging connector that Steve Jobs would have wanted

There are too many charging and interface cable standards in place. We can fix this, but it will take effort and broad industry buy-in. And Apple would have to fall in line. Apple says its investigation found that 90 percent of into Apple-branded goods sold on Amazon are counterfeit. Here’s are some tips on how to avoid being caught out. Cables. USB charging and interface cables. It’s overwhelming how many of these things we actually still need. It seems like no matter how much we want to try to do things wirelessly with our mobile devices, it usually is far more expedient — and often easier and more reliable — to use the good ‘ol cable for juicing up or connecting to many kinds of accessories and devices, such as automobile head units, wall chargers, and battery packs. Since its introduction in 1996, the Universal Serial Bus has undergone a number of revisions as it relates to data throughput and power transmission capabilities. The device side connector — the USB Type-A — for personal computers and tabletop devices has mostly remained unchanged (and is still backward compatible with current revisions) in the last 23 years, but the mobi...

I was given various psychological and personality profile tests back in 1981, a requirement for all

I was given various psychological and personality profile tests back in 1981, a requirement for all in-coming seminary students. The tests provided some good fodder for in-house humor among those of us who had left homes and jobs to study for ministry. Some of the humor I passed along, borrowing the voices of Jackie Gleason and Art Carney as Ralph Kramden and Ed Norton of the Honeymooners fame: Norton: Hey, Ralph, let’s me and you head out to the Racoon Lodge and afterwards go down and bowl a few games. Kramden: Nah, Norton, I can’t go bowling tonight. You heard about me giving up my job on the bus – going into the ministry. I’ve got to stay home and study for a test tomorrow. It’s a psychological test. Kramden: This is serious, Norton. That’s why I got to stay home and study for this test. They think they’re going to trick me. They think they’re going to find something wrong up here! (pointing at head). Ha! They think they’re’ going to find something WRONG. But you know what they’re going to find up there, Norton? You know what they’re going to find? Nuttin! Absolutely nuttin!” Seminary students, at least the ones I hung out with, seemed to love the little routine, especially ...

Controlling the degradation kinetics of porous iron by poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) infiltration for use as temporary medical implants

Thank you for visiting nature.com. You are using a browser version with limited support for CSS. In the meantime, to ensure continued support, we are displaying the site without styles and JavaScript. Iron and its alloy have been proposed as biodegradable metals for temporary medical implants. However, the formation of iron oxide and iron phosphate on their surface slows down their degradation kinetics in both in vitro and in vivo scenarios. This work presents new approach to tailor degradation behavior of iron by incorporating biodegradable polymers into the metal. Porous pure iron (PPI) was vacuum infiltrated by poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) to form fully dense PLGA-infiltrated porous iron (PIPI) and dip coated into the PLGA to form partially dense PLGA-coated porous iron (PCPI). Results showed that compressive strength and toughness of the PIPI and PCPI were higher compared to PPI. A strong interfacial interaction was developed between the PLGA layer and the iron surface. Degradation rate of PIPI and PCPI was higher than that of PPI due t...

Cobra King MIM wedge looks to change the paradigm for precision and softness with manufacturing first

The Cobra King MIM wedge, due at retail next month, has all the appearances of, well, another wedge. Which is perhaps the most remarkable thing about it because it is decidedly unlike any other wedge, indeed any other golf club, ever manufactured before. And that’s why, despite appearances, the King MIM wedge is making the case that it’s the most precisely produced wedge in the game today. The King MIM uses a metal injection molding process, which in the past in golf has been used to shape the intricately curved internal tungsten weights seen in some irons. Now, for the first time, Cobra is bringing the process to build an entire clubhead. In metal injection molding, a fine powdered mixture of the metal and a binder are used to form highly-specified shapes in an efficient almost one-step process. That’s especially important in wedges, which notoriously are some of the more complex shapes because of their specific sole grinds, leading edge curves and bounce angles that require a large degree of hand work, said Tom Olsavsky, Cobra’s vice president of research and development. Olsavsky said a typical wedge clubhead today might be touched 90 separate times during the manufacturing ...

Heartburn Gave My Dad Cancer. What About the Rest of Us?

Nearly 20 years ago, my family got together in the Finger Lakes region of New York for Thanksgiving. The last night of our trip, we went out to a local tavern for dinner. I can’t remember if my father ordered fried shrimp or fried chicken. I do remember he didn’t eat it because he said he didn’t feel well. When I looked at him across the table, he looked gray. As I approach the age at which my father died, I fear the thing that got him will get me. That’s because I, too, suffer from acid reflux — and so do many other Americans. Afterward, my parents returned to their home in Florida, and about two months later, in February of 2001, my father had trouble swallowing a glass of orange juice. He went to the doctor, they conducted tests, and he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. I recall my sister, trying to be helpful, sent out an email to the family with a link to an American Cancer Society webpage that essentially said esophageal cancer, while rare, is difficult to detect, and by the time symptoms arise, it’s often reached an advanced stage where it’s become difficult to treat. I cried the entire weekend, until my eyes were swollen. I was very close to my father. He was my bes...
