You’ve got to admire the steps some people take to squeeze a shop into a small space. Finding ways to pack in ever more tools and to work on bigger and bigger projects become ends to themselves for some, and the neat little tricks they find to do so can be really instructive. Take this workbench pop-up outlet strip for example. The shop that [Woodshop Junkies] occupies appears to be a single-car garage, on the smallish size in the first place, that is almost entirely filled with a multipurpose workbench. It provides tons of storage underneath and a massive work surface on top, but working with small power tools means stretching extension cords across the already limited floor space and creating a tripping hazard. So he claimed a little space on the benchtop for a clever trap door concealing a small tray holding an outlet strip. The tray rides on short drawer glides and, thanks to a small pneumatic spring, pops up when the door is unlatched. There was a little trouble with some slop in the glides causing the tray to jam, but that was taken care of with a simple roller bearing. The video below shows its construction and how it stays entirely out of the way until needed. As cool as...

BYD India, a subsidiary of China’s BYD Group, today launched two new electric vehicles — T3

BYD India, a subsidiary of China’s BYD Group, today launched two new electric vehicles — T3 MPV and T3 minivan. The two new introductions mark the foray of one of the world’s largest electric vehicle manufactures into India’s pure electric van segment. The price has not been revealed yet. Both T3 MPV and T3 minivan require only one-and-a-half hours to fully charge using DC charging equipment. The two electric vehicles (EVs) also support standard AC chargers. Both models can travel up to 300 km when fully charged. A single T3 MPV or T3 minivan can save the fuel consumption and emissions equivalent to five passengers cars, BYD (Build Your Dreams) claims. The company is also seeking local Indian partners for the electric van product series. BYD T3 MPV and BYD T3 minivan models adopt the company’s proprietary battery technology. The electric vehicles offer features like keyless entry, push-button start, music system with Bluetooth connectivity, reverse parking camera and sensors. The spaces have been diligently designed for accommodating passengers or cargo storage. The vehicles are equipped with automatic transmission. The safety features in T3 MPV and...

Engine Deep Dive: Toyota Tacoma’s Atkinson-Cycle V-6

In the world of upgraded and redesigned pickup trucks, new vehicles normally do not get a new powertrain at the same time. This was not the case with the redesigned-for-2016 Toyota Tacoma; it received the 2GR-FKS engine — a 24-valve V-6 rated at 278 horsepower and 265 pounds-feet of torque. Though new to the Tacoma platform, it wasn’t an all-new engine for Toyota. The 2GR-FKS — an Atkinson-cycle engine — is part of an engine family found in a range of other Toyota and Lexus vehicles such as the Toyota Highlander and Sienna, and Lexus GX, RX and LS. Its distinguishing characteristic is the ability of the intake valve to stay open longer than it does in other engines. That causes some of the air/fuel mixture to be pushed back into the intake manifold, allowing the engine to burn less fuel than a normal engine. However, the downside to the Atkinson cycle is that having less fuel in the piston cylinder chamber means the engine provides less power. Atkinson-cycle engines are most often paired with electric motors in hybrid vehicles to make up for the resulting power deficit. Toyota first used a variation of this engine in the 1997 Prius; now the technology is creeping into othe...

Amerequip Corp., Kiel, Wis., wants to keep growing its business with a handful of key OEM

Amerequip Corp., Kiel, Wis., wants to keep growing its business with a handful of key OEM customers. To do that, it can’t afford to supply assemblies and end products that don’t meet customer expectations. In the metal fabrication business, everyone would rather be busy than slow, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. In 2018 Amerequip Corp., a fabricator of custom equipment for the lawn, landscape, agricultural, and construction markets, was trying to keep up with a manufacturing economy that was red-hot. It had just completed a major expansion of its welding and fabricating areas at its main manufacturing facility in Kiel, Wis., in 2017 and boosted its laser cutting capacity with a major investment in cutting machines and a huge 15-tower, 200-shelf automated raw material storage and retrieval system, but it was still having trouble handling all of the new opportunities from its customers. How fast was the company growing? It had $55 million in sales revenue in 2016 and expects to reach $110 million in 2020. “We simply didn’t want to tell the customer ‘no,’” said Rob Abfall, Amerequip’s chief operating officer. Amerequip had made significant investments—$25 million alone in capital ...

‘A View From the Jeweler’s Bench’ Review: A Glittering Education

https://www.wsj.com/articles/a-view-from-the-jewelers-bench-review-a-glittering-education-11551302083 Gold beater’s block, repoussé hammer, solder pick, bezel pusher, burnishers, pliers, the torch and the kiln. Over millennia these tools have hardly changed. Eternal as well are the elemental metals and precious stones they work into wearable form. It all happens at the jeweler’s bench, where age-old techniques are tantamount to alchemy and earthly treasure is hand-wrought into adornments of spirituality, sovereignty and status. For anyone who has ever wondered what goes into the making of the finest jewelry—and why it has always been so costly—“A View From the Jeweler’s Bench” at the Bard Graduate Center Gallery is a gem of an education. The exhibition is subtitled “Ancient Treasures, Contemporary Statements,” and it is principally a dialogue between past and present on the essential subjects of mastery and imagination. Juxtaposing the work of 12 contemporary jewelry artists with a number of definitive historical pieces, the curator Sasha Nixon —who received her master’s degree from the Bard Graduate Center in 2018 and developed this show from her qualifying paper—shows how thes...

Getting great wildlife shots requires a great deal of patience, and even then nature won’t make

Getting great wildlife shots requires a great deal of patience, and even then nature won’t make an appearance unless you blend in with your environment. Rock up to a wildlife shoot in a dayglo shell suit and you wont attract any birds, feathered or otherwise. But which camouflage is best? Shooting in sandy or snowy conditions rather than a wood? Hunt out a hide that can be specced in a choice of covers. A decent dome hide may be the lap of luxury, but carrying several extra kilos makes it vital to plan your shooting. Look for camo scrim netting that’ll make your hide almost invisible or nature-themed camera covers. Even the fanciest hide won’t instantly inspire animals to strike the perfect pose, so pack plenty of provisions. The cover of choice for most pros is a dedicated hide. A typical tent design gives you numerous windows to shoot through and is usually a doddle to set up. You’ll also have plenty of room to move around inside, as well as decent protection from the elements. However, the weight and bulk of a full-on portable hide can be a pain when you’re on the go. That’s where camouflage clothing comes into its own. Go for a hoodie and trousers that’ll slip straight over ...

Best Anti-Theft Locking Beach Bags and Lock Boxes for Valuables

AquaVault’s packable FlexSafe beach safe locks to lounge chairs and can fit your keys, phone, wallet, and more. These clever locking beach bags, portable safes, and other security devices are the best way to avoid theft at the beach this Labor Day weekend and beyond. It’s a cruel summer, indeed. Barcelona’s Guàrdia Urbana municipal police force told CNN that it has had to issue 174 emergency clothing kits to beachgoers this summer after a spate of thefts at Barcelona’s city beaches. These “support packs” contain a T-shirt, flip-flops, pants, and a metrocard so victims of beach theft can make their way back to their hotels in more than just a bathing suit. As tourism numbers surge in Barcelona, so has the city’s crime rate, the Spanish daily newspaper El País reports. But beach theft can happen anywhere. The best way to make sure your belongings are safe while you swim is to leave as much as possible back in your hotel room and to make sure someone stays with your valuables at all times once you’re beachside. But sometimes that’s not realistic, especially if you’re traveling solo or not staying close to the water.  Before you head to the coast this Labor Day weekend—or on any bea...
