The distinctive properties of ionic liquids enable versatility and efficiency across many industrial applications

The distinctive properties of ionic liquids enable versatility and efficiency across many industrial applications Ionic liquids — salts in a liquid state at ambient conditions — make up a fascinating family of materials whose unique physical properties have made them highly sought after for many challenging applications. Nearly all ionic liquids (ILs) exhibit extremely low vapor pressure, but the diversity of ILs give way to countless combinations of anions and cations that can provide desirable properties for a vast array of uses. IL-based technologies are still rather new commercially. BASF SE (Ludwigshafen, Germany; www.basf.com) became the first company to apply ILs at an industrial scale when a unit operating its BASIL (biphasic acid-scavenging utilizing ionic liquids) process technology went onstream in 2004 at BASF’s Ludwigshafen site. Since then, industrial applications for ILs have greatly expanded. ILs are now used as industrial solvents, lubricants, additives and more. This article details some recent industrial applications of ILs where they promote efficiency and sustainability. The pretreatment of lignocellulosic biomass, a challenging step in the preparation of bi...

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – As the holidays begin, it is important to remember the comfort and safety of pets. Today, with more pet-friendly travel options than ever before, pet owners can happily bring pets along by car, plane, or train. Expert veterinarians at BluePearl Specialty and Emergency Pet Hospital recommend following these tips to ensure a safe and low-stress trip. Certain dog and cat breeds are particularly susceptible to the hazards that air travel can bring, such as bulldogs, pugs, Boston terriers, and Himalayan and Persian cats. These animals have short nasal passages and more narrow airways, which puts them at higher risk for breathing difficulty and heat stroke, especially in poorly ventilated or temperature-controlled areas. Uttrakhand-based Crayon Motors has launched its low-speed electric scooter called Envy. It’s available in two variants: VRLA (a.k.a lead acid battery) and lithium ion, priced at Rs 53,000 and Rs 65,000 (ex-showroom Delhi) respectively. It’s available in three colours: white, blue and orange. Unfortunately, neither of them comply with FAME-II subsidy. Crayon’s portfolio already includes the Zeez, another low-speed e-scooter. The Crayon Envy is powered by 250W BLDC motor that delivers a top speed of 25km. Thanks to its low speed, it can be ridden without a licence. Both scooters offer a claimed range of 70km per charge but vary in terms of charge times. VRLA, for instance, takes up to 5-6 hours for a full charge while the lithium-ion variant which features a removable battery takes between 2-3 hours. It can be charged via a conventional 5 Amp socket. The life cycle of these batteries fluctuates between 500 to 800 cycles depending on the model. They are also quite light. The VRLA variant weighs 100kg and the Li-ion version tips the scales at just 80kg. On the feature front, the duo comes equipped with LED lights, a digital instrument console, reverse assist, keyless ignition &...

If you’re looking for a ’90s sedan that can spank supercars, we’re confident you’ll like this Jaguar. It’s a Lister-modified XJ12 with a twin-supercharged V-12 making a claimed 604 horsepower, a manual transmission, and lots of other upgrades. It’s for sale right now on eBay Motors. According to the seller, this car was purchased in 1993 and sent directly to Lister for a host of mechanical and cosmetic upgrades. The engine displacement was increased to 7.0 liters, and equipped with a billet crankshaft, polished cylinder heads, Cosworth forged pistons, bigger valves, new camshafts, a reprogrammed injection system, and other upgrades. With the addition of two superchargers, it makes 604 horsepower and 612 lb-ft of torque. That’s more than a brand-new Jaguar XJR. The seller says the car recently underwent a full recommission, with a new clutch and flywheel, refre...

Not that long ago, carrying school supplies on one’s back seemed like a crazy concept. Until

Not that long ago, carrying school supplies on one’s back seemed like a crazy concept. Until the 1980s, backpacks were used mostly for hiking and outdoor activities. Students used entirely different (and much less convenient) modes of transportation for their school supplies: Until the 1930s, many students used leather straps to hold together the books they carried. Later, students used mini briefcases or one-strap bags. In 1969, the company JanSport created a daypack for skiing and hiking; they happened to be selling them at a store connected to the University of Washington bookstore, and students started using these bags to keep their books dry in rainy Seattle. Today, backpacks have become a staple of student life. Kids see backpacks as a symbol of identity, and choosing a backpack is often a careful and deliberate process. Backpacks can be indicative of everything from a kid’s favorite cartoon to her country of nationality to her socioeconomic status. They’re tiny windows of insight into what students care about and the kinds of worlds they are inhabiting. These photos peek at what kids around the globe have been carrying on their backs. We want to hear what you think about...

How the beery vision of brewing a small fortune can fall flat | Business

Tax relief, light regulation and crowdfunding has spawned nearly 2,000 craft beer firms in the UK with experts predicting the bubble to burst very soon Equally simple, it sometimes appears, is the formula for setting up your own brewery. Quit the day job, buy the requisite kit and brew up batches of foaming nut-brown ale. If you’re particularly successful, you can cash in your chips by selling to a global mega-brewer, like Camden and Meantime, or make a cool £100m by wooing a private equity backer, as the founders of BrewDog did earlier this month. Success stories like these have fostered an explosion in the number of micro-brewery startups, whether they do it for profit or sheer passion. The number of UK craft brewers has grown 65% from 1,026 in 2011 to around 1,700 today, more per capita than any other nation in the world. Such rapid growth was made possible by tax reliefs introduced by Gordon Brown as chancellor in 2002 and further fuelled by a shift in appetites towards independent “craft” beers. However, for all the cockle-warming success stories, many a beery vision has fallen flat. Figures from the Insolvency Service show that 19 drinks manufacturers went bust in 2014, 23...

Tamil Nadu Plastic Ban 2019: List of banned items and eco-friendly alternatives

With less than two weeks to go for the plastic ban to come into effect across Tamil Nadu, the state government has released a descriptive list of items that have been banned. In addition to this, the state has also recommended eco-friendly alternatives that it hopes will replace plastic. On World Environment Day this year, with a view to curb the effects of plastic on the environment, the Tamil Nadu government announced a ban of non-biodegradable and single-use plastic and had recommended the use of natural, environmental-friendly products. Explaining the dangers that the use of plastic has on the environment and on animals, Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami told the Assembly on June 5, “With the vision of gifting a plastic-free Tamil Nadu to our future generation, the government hereby bans the use of plastic goods of all sizes (microns).” The House Select Committee had also recommended the restricted use of plastic for daily-use products like milk, curd, oil and medicines. 1. a.
